Japan's countryside is stunning and often inaccessible by train. A rental car unlocks rural Japan, but you need to know the rules first.

- • International Driving Permit (IDP) — from your home country
- • Your original home country driver's license
- • Passport
- • Credit card (for deposit)
- • Minimum age: usually 18–21
⚠️ Important Exceptions
- • 🇨🇭 Swiss licenses: special process needed
- • 🇩🇪🇫🇷🇮🇹🇧🇪🇲🇨🇹🇼 Some countries: IDP from home country NOT accepted — contact embassy
- • Chinese driving licenses: NOT valid in Japan
- • IDP must be Geneva Convention (1949)
💡 Get your IDP before traveling: You cannot get an International Driving Permit in Japan. Apply at your local automobile association (AAA, AA, ADAC, etc.) before your trip. Cost is usually $15–20.

- • Emergency: pull over, turn on hazard lights
⚠️ DUI is extremely serious in Japan. The legal limit is effectively zero. A foreign tourist caught drink-driving faces immediate arrest, heavy fines, and possible deportation. Never drink and drive.
