Train Delays & Cancellations
Japan trains are famously punctual, but delays do happen — here is exactly what to do.
🚨 If Your Train Is Delayed
- 1Check the displaysStation screens show delay duration in Japanese and sometimes English. Look for 遅延 (chien = delay) or 運休 (unkyu = cancelled).
- 2Check the JR or Metro app/websiteJR East, Tokyo Metro, and most lines have English-language service status pages. Google "JR East service information".
- 3Look for 振替輸送 signs振替輸送 (furikae yuso = replacement transport) signs appear during major delays. This means you can ride competing lines for FREE with your ticket.
- 4Ask at the ticket gateStation staff can help route you. Show them your destination on your phone map. They're used to helping tourists.
- 5Get a 遅延証明書 (delay certificate)If you need proof of delay for work or an appointment, ask for a 遅延証明書 at any station office. It's free.
🚌 Replacement Transport (振替輸送)
During major disruptions, rail companies activate 振替輸送 — you can ride other rail companies' lines for free using your original ticket or IC card.
- ✅ Show your ticket at the alternative line's entrance
- ✅ IC card users: tell staff at the gate you're using 振替輸送
- ✅ Signs will be posted in Japanese — look for 振替輸送 with arrows
- ⚠️ Does NOT work with IC cards automatically — you must show it to staff
💴 Getting a Refund
Paper Ticket Refunds
If your train is cancelled, take your ticket to any ticket window (みどりの窓口). You'll get a full refund with no cancellation fee.
IC Card
If you tapped in but couldn't complete your journey, go to the station office and explain. Staff can reverse the fare deduction.

💡 Delay Certificate at the Airport: If a train delay causes you to miss your flight, get a 遅延証明書 immediately. Airlines and travel insurance companies may use this to waive rebooking fees.
